Row of Stainless Steel Refrigerators slightly at a titled angle

If you've been on the hunt for appliances, furniture, or any significant home items, you've probably come across the term "Open Box." But what does "Open Box" actually mean? In simple terms, purchasing an open-box appliance implies that the packaging of the appliance has already been opened. It's a straightforward concept, isn't it?

Open-box products offer an excellent opportunity to secure significant discounts on what could otherwise be brand-new appliances. Generally, these open-box items do not exhibit any wear or damage. However, items labeled as open-box can encompass a variety of origins, such as being used as floor models, returned by customers, or having minor imperf ections upon arrival at the retailer, thus categorizing them as open-box items. Consequently, open-box items also come with a condition rating, informing potential buyers about whether they are in "Like New," "Excellent," "Satisfactory," or "Fair" condition. These are also the ratings we use at Airport Home Appliance.

Like New

Like New appliances closely resemble brand-new items both in appearance and overall packaging. They may arrive in either partial or complete original packaging. These items are devoid of any physical imperfections, scratches, or scuffs, and they come complete with all the original parts and essential accessories. Essentially, these items are exactly like a new one, but they may have been opened and returned to a store and ultimately just never used.

Excellent

Excellent-grade products exhibit a pristine appearance similar to brand-new items, also may have extremely small physical imperfections, scratches, or scuffs. They will come complete with all the original essential components and accessories. These products will be presented in either their original packaging or a fitting substitute box. However, the owner's manuals or manufacturer registration cards may not be included. So again, very close to being an absolutely brand-new product.

Satisfactory

Products categorized as Satisfactory display mild to moderate indications of use that solely influence their cosmetic presentation without compromising their operational performance. These products are still devoid of any dents, chips, cracks, or substantial scratches. And, in instances where the product incorporates a screen and/or glass panels, they will be undamaged and fully operational, with no major flaws in the viewing area. The original packaging and certain components as well as accessories may be absent as a whole.

Fair

Fair grade products function as intended, yet they exhibit notable to more pronounced scratches, dents, imperfections, or chips. For example, a refrigerator with an LED screen display could have a dent on the side door accompanied by minor scuffs on the screen, though this would not impede food preservation or visibility of the screen. These products will not have the original packaging and might be missing certain components and accessories.

The Risks & Benefits of Purchasing Open Box Items

The advantage of buying an open-box appliance is that you're almost certain to secure it at a reduced price. Therefore, if you've had your eye on a high-end appliance and come across one listed as an open box, you could potentially score a deal that's hard to come by elsewhere. Those minor scuffs and blemishes might translate into significant savings on the models you've been hunting!

One potential drawback when buying open-box items is the possibility of the appliance warranty becoming void if the packaging has been opened, the product has been returned, or if it's been previously used. In such cases, it's advisable to contact the retailer to verify the status of the warranty or explore options to add a warranty during or after the purchase. Additionally, it's important to be mindful of the primary reasons behind these open-box items, as some may have been returned after use, while others may have served as floor models, potentially resulting in a less -than-pristine appliance condition and less careful handling during its time as a floor model.

Finally, it's important to note that open-box appliances are usually sold as final sales, meaning there are no returns accepted. Therefore, it's crucial to be absolutely certain about your desire for that specific item, as there's no opportunity for a return once the purchase is made.

Final Thoughts

Open-box products can offer you substantial savings on top appliance brands and other premium appliances. They're especially budget-friendly if you're considering a kitchen renovation or simply need to replace an old range or refrigerator. Ultimately, if you're comfortable with a few minor imperfections or the fact that the appliance's packaging has been opened, open-box items can be an excellent choice for you.

However, if you have concerns about not being able to return the item after purchase, it might be wiser to opt for a brand-new appliance instead.

Notice: As of September 1st, all Open Box sales are Final Sale at Airport Home Appliance.
